Community Rights Counsel Touts Role of Environmental Issues
in
Defeat of the Nomination of William G. Myers to the Ninth
Circuit
Washington, D.C. - The Senate today refused
to confirm President Bush's choice for the U.S. Court of Appeals
for the Ninth Circuit, William G. Myers III, marking the first
time that a nomination has been successfully opposed primarily
on the basis of environmental concerns. A former energy and
ranching industry lobbyist who recently served as Solicitor
of the Department of the Interior, Myers's nomination drew
strong opposition from environmental groups, Native American
and tribal groups, and civil rights organizations across the
country.
"This is the first judicial nomination in history that
has been defeated on environmental grounds," said Doug
Kendall, Executive Director of Community Rights Counsel. "It
proves there is no litmus test in judicial confirmation battles.
There are a number of critical issues at stake in judicial
nominations, and the environment is at the top of the list."
