STATEMENT OF SENATOR EDWARD
M. KENNEDY
Press Conference on Environmental Issues and Judicial Selection
In recent years, the Supreme Court has issued decisions
that undermine some of our country's most important laws, including civil
rights, employment, and environmental legislation enacted by
Congress. Whether provisions of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water
Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, or the Age Discrimination in
Employment Act, the tendency to undermine federal statues is clear and
worrisome.
I hope we can achieve a realistic balance between the
federal government and the states -- a balance that enables the basic
rights of all citizens to be fully and fairly protected. Clearly
this is and should be an important issue when considering nominations to the
Supreme Court and other federal courts.
