The Constitutional Accountability Center’s Chief Counsel will direct the public interest law firm parts of CAC’s operation, translating CAC’s ideas about constitutional text and history into legal arguments and briefs. The Chief Counsel will develop and implement CAC’s litigation program, drafting and filing appellate (typically amicus curiae) briefs in high-profile cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and in carefully selected cases in federal appellate and state supreme courts. The Chief Counsel will be counsel of record on CAC’s briefs, drafting some in partnership with other CAC attorneys and editing others produced by a network of outside, pro bono attorneys. Over time, the Chief Counsel will also work with CAC’s senior staff members to build a cadre of outside lawyers who will work pro bono on CAC briefs and will supervise the work of these outside attorneys. The Chief Counsel will also identify cases in which CAC should file briefs, and write reports, op-eds, essays, and blog posts that advance CAC’s ideas.
The ideal candidate will be an appellate litigator with top academic credentials, demonstrated skills in brief writing and appellate advocacy, and the desire to develop a Supreme Court litigation practice. Salary and benefits are competitive with senior level positions in other non-profit organizations.
